Literature Text

People don’t understand why I sleep during the day
Why I groan, yawn, and tire out

I wake, upon the setting sun
And my eyes open wide at last

It is at night that I stand tall and alive
Living as I am supposed to be

At night I can laugh out loud
I can cry with sadness or happiness

I can dance without fear of others eyes
And sing without abandon

I can do whatever I please at my own pace
I can find immense joy in the darkness

And yet people cannot understand it
The jubilee I take in the twilight

The way I blossom under the light of the moon
And find comfort in the silence

At night I am my truest self
So queer a thing to the sunrise

It is in those late hours I let myself free
Free to be the me I've always known I could be

Because the night
The night belongs to me
I have made a promise to the moon and stars
To never lie to their faces
To be myself just as they are
So that I might stay in their good graces
